Finally Switching to the Mac
I’m finally going to attempt moving to the Mac as my main computer. I do like Windows 7 but I prefer OS X and using both depending on where I am has become annoying. Mostly, I’m tired of trying to sync things between windows and mac and buying similar software for both. Because I can’t get away from Windows forever, work stuff, I’m going to run it in a virtual with just the apps I need that are Windows only.
If all works out, I hope to buy a 17″ MacBook Pro in a couple months. Since it supports 8GB of RAM, has the latest faster CPUs, and comes with a nice big 1920×1200 matte display it will be better than my 15″ MacBook Pro that’s almost 2 years old.
Day 1
Just got done installing Windows 7 RC1 into Boot Camp. No problems, except I should’ve installed Boot Camp drivers before patching Windows 7. Windows Update has better video driver but the Boot Camp driver setup overrides those when it installs. Had to download the driver manually and apply it but it’s all good now. Next up, install VMWare Fusion in OS X so I can run my Boot Camp partition as a VM, then installing Visual Studio 2008, Oracle drivers, and TOAD for Oracle.
No more syncing photos, music, bookmarks, passwords, etc… I hope this works out.

My first issue. The Drobo is formatted in NTFS and the Mac can only read to that, not write.

You know the simpler answer is to NOT try to use a mac. You do exclusively windows work dude. Why do you insist that fancy new and shiny square peg is ever gonna fit that round hole?
Also, why aren’t you playing WoW anymore? Are you spending all your time trying to make macs play with windows?

I enjoy the Mac much more dude. I want to use a Mac exclusively and would love to have a job where I could. Trust me, if I was like you and had a work PC and a home computer that was just for that it’d be a Mac. I’m trying to come up with something where when I leave the house and come there or go anywhere I still can work or play.
I’ll be playing WoW again, just taking some time off. With the house move I got busy for a couple weeks, was either working or doing stuff around here and got out the habit. I have it on the Mac and will be playing again. Probably not as much as I was but I did enjoy it.
And my Mac isn’t fancy new, it’s almost 2 years old :(

My switching experiment failed pretty quickly. I realized that my livlihood depending on work in Windows and doing that via a VM or even just in Boot Camp was less than optimum.
I'm going to write a longer post on the direction I'm heading soon. Still love my Mac and using it as my 'personal' computer. Windows for work.
